2012 Block of the Month

I just found the first week of January drag on and on... Trying to find motivation to begin what I had intended to start.

BUT, I did find it and am started on my first New Year's Resolution of doing a block of the month quilt. If you still need a new project, this one's free and looks like an interesting challenge.

January's two blocks are the asterick block and wonky pound sign block. These are 12.5" blocks that will be sewn together to make a quilt near the end of this year. There will be a variety of 20 blocks.

I will be using only fabrics from my stash and have chosen a different colour family for each month. This month my main colour is blue.

This much talked about year of 2012 has finally arrived. It is here! So, what are we doing do to make it magical?

I would definitely set aside all those doom and gloom scenarios; and reflect on how each one of us can bring peace and joy to our world.

New Year's Resolutions...

Another year to reflect on what was and then to plan ahead. What is it that we wish to accomplish this year? I try to think of positive ways that I can bring something new into my creative world and hope to live healthy without the guilt that old, failed resolutions generally produce.

2010

I challenged myself to try new quilting techniques, which I called my "2010 Quilt Technique Challenge". My blog, QuiltSamplerJournal, is where I shared this journey. I also created a website to showcase a variety of quilting books.

2011

This time, it was completing my certificate in Applied Business Technology (administrative assistant certificate) in college that I had the opportunity to start in September 2010. Perhaps, next year I'll figure out what to do with this knowledge!

I also updated my own website, and added photos of my 2010 challenge and free PDF patterns.

2012

Time again to add some fun things to this year! Adding a few new things is always a fun goal for the year ahead. Two things that I still wish to try are: free-motion quilting on my own machine and doing a block-of-the month project.

Upon reflection, I will continue to create some projects from books I choose and document my progress on my QuiltSamplerJournal blog. And, here I will add extra things I will do.

Flower Theme Quilts

We are welcome to use blogging, tweeting or facebook comments to spread the word... So, here it is, I finally have entered a quilt in the weekly contest on the Quilting Gallery website. This is the first theme this year that I actually have made. And, since I love quilting up flowers the time is now to enter and enjoy the fun!!

Look, No Pins!

Recently, when making another quilt project for my QSJ blog, I tried out a new way of putting a selvage block together, without pins! It will be available there on July 25, 2010.

I figured adding this portion, to that blog entry would definitely make it a very long read, so here is how I constructed this one block that is a part of that quilt project. You can go check out the finished quilt, later.

I love using selvages in my projects, and found this selvage block worked perfectly in this quilt design. It is really quite easy, and once you get in some practice there really isn`t any need for pins, however, this may still be an option for you. It worked great for me.

TUTORIAL

To begin, I gathered up my selvages and fusible interfacing. My project needed a 4" block. So, I cut the selvage strips 4 1/2" long and the interfacing into 4 1/2" squares. The fusible interfacing does not require a marked grid. I had this in my supply cabinet, as I had used it for another project.

Once I had cut enough pieces of selvage strips and interfacing squares, I was ready to fuse the strips onto the interfacing. Then placing the interfacing on the ironing surface, fusible side facing up, I carefully pressed one strip at a time onto the fusible side of the interfacing with my iron. I used a blank selvage strip on both sides, as these were going to be sewn into other blocks.

Here, you can see... that I continued with this process until all the blocks I needed, were completed! The back side of the block is now safe to iron, as the fusible side of the interfacing is completely covered with selvage strips.

Now, we are ready to stitch down the selvage strips so they will stay in place when continuing with the quilting process.

I was able to stitch the whole block without stopping or cutting the thread. First, start by sewing down one edge of the selvage, stitching across the bottom of the strip and then continuing back up the next strip, until all the strips have been sewn down. When all the selvage strips have been sewn down, it is time to trim the blocks. I needed these blocks to be 4" square and so cut them to that size. They are now ready to use in my quilt project.

I was delighted to find another quilt project, for my 2010 quilt challenge, that I could use more of my saved selvages. It is clear to see that once a new technique is learned that we do enjoy, many great ideas will appear...

SELVAGES

Since finding the selvage blog last year, I have made tiny Christmas stockings with selvage toes, created a unique garden design with selvages that was inspired from the book, "Quilts from the Selvage Edge", and another project incorporating selvages that will be reviewed on July 25, on my QSJ blog.

So... now for another new block to try, why not visit the selvage blog and try the asterisk block. Karen shows how to construct this easy-to-assemble block on her Quilt-Along Asterisk tutorial.

I don't know when I will actually incorporate time to make a quilt from this new block, but I did have to try at least ~~one~~ two for now.

Here are my preferred results (second attempt)...

The finished block is 6" square. For complete instructions check out the tutorial for yourself. You get to decide if you wish to press the seams open or towards the strip. I found pressing them towards the strip much less bulky.

Other Notes: since I use a 1/4" quilting foot, I made my strip 1 1/4" wide instead of 1" wide. This way I had no bulk when I pressed the seams, as shown above. Also, my block was able to be trimmed to 6" square.

Here is my first attempt:

I used a one inch strip and pressed the seams open. This continues to add more bulk as each seam is added. And because I use a full 1/4" seam, when they are pressed towards the strip, they overlap, and this bulk doesn't allow it to lay flat. I also did not end up with a 6" square after it was trimmed. I was very happy with my second attempt.

It is a great way to renew the soul and find strength when an extra boost is needed.

I certainly was delighted when I won the "Handbag of the Month" contest in February at the StudioKat Designs website. And, I also didn't take too long to decide on how I would spend my prize...

This is what came in the mail this week and it looks like I'll only be able to admire the patterns for awhile, as I have some other important projects to complete first.

But I do know that the Polso Pouch will be a great bag for carrying the essentials when out for a walk with my camera. And, I choose the Cirque Sac purse because I know just how I'll embellish it!!

It'll be great fun, when they arrive at the top of my to-do-list!!

Time for a Birthday Celebration… and a Guessing Game!

Do you like guessing games and treasure hunts? Then, read on… as I have a game waiting for you to try out! Using one of the candy projects in my eBook, "Quilter's Candy Delights", I will post the rules and we’ll see how it turns out. A fond memory… when my own children were young, I’d make up clues and they’d have to figure out where their birthday gifts were hidden. There was always help if a clue turned out to be too difficult, but it was always a fun search.

The other day, my son told me that he had really enjoyed those times. On one occasion, SBF(now brother-in-law) went along with him to see what it was all about. At one point in the search, my son had two clues to follow and they each took one and went to follow the clue. Of course, SBF didn’t give the place away, but I guess he had never done that on his birthday. The things we do, as kids, are just taken as normal events and we don’t realize that not everyone does it the same way.

A Beautiful Surprise

Remember... that handbag that I made last year? The Lollapalooza handbag from StudioKat designs.

My Lollapalooza

I was sure to give up on the process, as it seemed more difficult then what I had figured. Or... I should think perhaps, I love those challenges, but didn't realize how much my sewing machine would groan when trying to climb those huge bulky seams!!

I remember telling myself, that if I didn't complete the handbag, I couldn't win the gift certificate in the "Handbag of the Month" contest. So, that really boosted my enthusiasm to forge onward with the process.

So, when I finally had all the things ready and got an email sent off in January, I did enjoy seeing it appear in the February 2010 contest on the website.

Actually, for most of the month, I had lots of other fun things to do and didn't give it too much thought, until yesterday, when I realized the news of the winner would soon be announced. To my delight and surprise, that winning email just arrived in my mailbox this morning!!

So, just to make sure, I wasn't dreaming... here is the proof, that I WON!! Visit StudioKatDesigns to have a look!!

And... what is really cool, is that my birthday is tomorrow and I'll love spending time picking out my next handbag pattern. Who'd a thought, I'd be making another handbag, so soon!!

Family Tree Is Ready

I realize it has been awhile since I updated you on this quilt project. After completing another quilt top I returned to finish this one, as well. An entry on another blog I have and updating my sister on my progress, it is now time to finish the last entry on the FAMILY TREE quilt, here.

So, without further delay.... At the last entry, I still wasn't sure if it would be my first quilt to hang or not. However, after we discussed things, it was decided that she really did want something else and so that will be another project coming up.

I can say that I did learn some valuable things and am grateful for the ability to expand my quilting skills. I definitely love working with flowers and really enjoyed the process that developed. This design may actually be turned into a pattern when I get another block of time to focus in that direction.

Winter Olympic Games

Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games

The celebrations have begun... Canada's first gold medal on home soil!!

We enjoyed watching the opening ceremonies at home on TV on Friday!! What a great show that was!! The best thing about being at home to watch is that you are already home when the show is done! Although, I do believe that being there is a great thing too, just we didn't choose that option, this time!!

I'd like to wish all the athletics from the world the very best in their chosen sports. What I believe is the best thing about the olympic games are the efforts from so many people to organize and host such an event. I also love the thought that all these different countries come together to participate with like mind and purpose - to be the very best and work towards obtaining a medal.

Time to Vote

Last fall, I decided to sew a handbag for myself, as I did a lot of sewing when I was younger. I figured it was time to revisit that pastime, and found it was fun and challenging. And when I had thoughts of abandoning the project, I told myself that I wouldn't have a chance at winning if I quit before it was finished, so it gave me the determination to continue.

After our move, and other things going on, I finally got it finished and took some pictures to send to the website to be considered for the next month's handbag of the month contest. I wanted to receive some great comments from people I didn't know first, before sending in the information and that actually happened last month when I was shopping at Fabricland.

Family Tree Blossoms

When working on a project, the only person that actually sees the design is the creator of it... let me explain. I thought this would be an easy project to complete in the week or so that I had available because of my speed at finishing my first three book review quilts.

However, it does take more effort when consulting with another person on fabrics, colors, etc, and that had me thinking of some of the things that I liked and disliked about this process. It created some friction because when a designer creates, the ideas flow more easily when the process is on "automatic pilot". I found because I had thoughts of "What if this doesn't turn out as beautiful as the picture in my mind?" and she wondered if she'd like it because the initial pictures seemed so bare.

So, after we discussed things, it was decided that if she doesn't like the results, then I'll just make another for her, because after all, our ancestry is the same, all that I need to do is replace her nameplate with my own.

Okay, good... after that I felt free to continue to create and allow whatever ideas that flowed through me to appear on my quilt top.

And here is what has blossomed so far...

After placing the flowers on the tree in the correct positions, I added leaves (paper) for checking placement of the flowers and then using string laid out how I imagined the lines of stitching should go to connect the flowers and leaves. I then lightly penciled in the lines before stitching them with a straight stitch.

Using a green variegated thread I stitched the penciled lines first with a straight stitch and then went over the lines with a fine zig-zag stitch. My plans are to add a straight stitch on each side of the zigzag when quilting the layers together to make a more pronounced stem.

The left side of the tree below shows the straight stitch and the right side shows the straight stitch has been covered with the sizg-zag stitch.

I am now working on stitching around the flowers before I add the leaves and other details to enhance the quilt top.

Quilt a Family Tree

Last year, it was decided I would do a family tree quilt for my sister because genealogy is her hobby. One that I have no clue how to do and she doesn't quilt, so it was scheduled for 2010. Since I have a week to work on it, I began planning out this new project, so here it goes...

A New Idea...

To begin a new quilt with only an idea... it certainly takes a different approach from following along with something that is already in a book.

After a few days... of contemplating the idea, whether it was going to be as easy as I first thought, I needed to do some searching online to see what was already out there, how to draw a tree, which I found challenging as I haven't done any sketching for many years, and then taking a walk to take some pictures of trees. I decided I needed to sleep on it, as no clear vision was presenting itself.

Okay, so the next day I was serious about getting something done and actually found my pencil doddling out something... it was flowers. I love flowers and so does my sister, as gardening was something we've both enjoyed over the years. But, I still needed a tree, and now that I have sketched a tree... the next thing was to draw it to scale.

Also, I pulled out fabrics (lots of them) from my cabinet... to contemplate on the color scheme which was to fit into earthy tones, browns, with splashes of mustards, oranges, and greens, blues and such like turquoise.

So here is what I have to share so far, as tomorrow I'll begin on the names I need to add to the tree and add leaves.

Do you enjoy finding new adventures and then exploring them? Well, it appears one is never too old to start or to begin again if it has been some time since you have added memorable experiences to your memory bank.

I recently discovered a new quilting technique that has me inspired!! And because I love books have created a website and blog around quilting topics. It is delightful to see an idea blossom and touch the lives of others.

New Year's Resolutions

WHAT KIND OF QUILTER AM I?

I am in the process of figuring out what things I do not like and what things I do like about quilting. This would clarify my purpose for quilting and show me where to focus my attention for the maximum benefit. If someone were to ask me what kind of quilter I am, I would need to first think about it because I really am not sure yet. So, come back in December 2010 for my answer to this question...

Therefore... this would make a great New Year's resolution for me: and that is to try and figure out what kind of quilter I really want to be. I plan to draw up a list over the next 12 months and then share with you at the end of the year what I discovered about myself and what kind of quilter I am.

This year I also plan to try new techniques each month and get a better understanding of the vast range of techniques and styles that have surfaced for our quilting journey. My goal is to try two new techniques each month from books that are on my website (below) and share my projects on my quilt sampler journal blog.

GOALS ACHIEVED:

I also wanted to publish my new website in January 2010 so we can all share our quilting projects and help new quilter's find great quilting books and learn what types of techniques are available to discover.

There are so many new styles and techniques that it can really be a difficult task to know where to begin. I also would love to share quilting books written by new authors so they can be successful in receiving many sales of their new book(s).

I think discovering new quilting techniques... a great way to add skills to my quilting adventure and in the process learn what kind of quilter I am as I step into the alphabet anywhere from A to Z.

I would love for others to take this journey with me in 2010 and share this button on their blogs and websites so we can learn together. On this website I will also publish comments, quilt stories and photographs, a question of the month, feature two quilt books each month and enjoy the blogging journey to all those great websites that are connected with each quilting book listed between A-Z.

Visiting the websites of other quilters and authors is truly inspiring, as you will see when you step through that portal with a click of your mouse. It may just be worth planning a weekend getaway... without leaving home, just to visit these delightful websites. Then send me an email and tell me about your adventure.

How-to Add a Button

This may be easy for some, but then sometimes the easy things aren't so for others... I tried this without any help from the techie knowledge base (my son) and thought I'd post it here for anyone that needs it.

WHEN ADDING AN IMAGE WITHOUT CODE:

If there is no code available with an image to paste into your blog's sidebar then you will need to save the image and continue with the "add a gadget" blog box. To copy an image, right click on the image and choose "save picture as" from the list to save it to your computer. Take note of where the image will be saved so you can find it when you need it.

In the blogger dashboard, click on "layout" and choose the "add a gadget" frame:

Then, choose the "picture" gadget from the list that appears:

Next, fill in the "configure image" box with the necessary details. And when finished click save.

After saving, view the blog to see how your new addition turned out. You may edit or delete it later easily when necesssary.

Merry Christmas

Here it is Christmas once again...

so the turkey is thawing in the fridge (after we split it in two halves, so we can have the other half another time) and the groceries are bought, including the pumpkin pie and nanaimo bars. No homemade baking this year... except I think there may be chocolate chip cookies later today! Will see how this oven bakes, as it's always like an experiment when one hasn't used it before for baking... it seems hotter then the temperature indicates.

I enjoyed making those tiny Christmas stockings for hanging on the mantel's face, so it happened that I decided I should still make some for the grandchildren. After much delaying, I got motivated to proceed and they were finally mailed out on Monday. Perhaps, they made it there today, or at least they'll be there soon.

Selvages and Christmas Stockings

Why not? There are new ideas discovered everyday on the internet and I was very intrigued by the technique of using the selvage edge of fabric for creating new quilt projects instead of tossing these bits of fabric into the trash.

Therefore, I have been following the selvage blog and it is a delight for me to check out what other creative people are coming up with and also visiting their blogs. I hoped to one day make something myself from those fabric edges. And, so here is my first project using the selvages. It was fun to dig through my fabrics and see which pieces I would use here.

It did take me some time to figure out how I was going to make this project, then more time to cut selvages, and then get organized in my mind the designs I actually wanted to sew up... and then that light bulb moment came.... Ahhhhhh.... that's it!! Did you spot it?

Here are my mini Christmas stockings... They did look bigger before they were stitched together and I may make bigger ones to hang from the mantel later or perhaps for next year. They are shown below in the order I made them. For something so small, they certainly took time to make...although I think I could have made at least six of them in the time it took me...with all the seam ripper and cutting time to fix all the "oops, not again" moments!! Oh well, it was still fun experimenting.

I do enjoy trying new things and this was a very fun project. The book the pattern came from is called: Fast Fun & Easy Christmas Stockings by Susan S. Terry. Lots of Sewing Going On!!

Okay... sewing studio ready for business!! I have now finished two more quilt tops and my handbag that was started in October. Here are some photos of my progress. For more photos, you may visit my other blog listed in the right hand column.

The first quilt to be completed in my new space was this one: "Christmas Medallion". I also entered it into a Christmas contest at the Quilting Gallery. It will make a decorative table topper at my house this year. I plan to take it to the guild meeting for 'show and tell' which by the way, is next week. I am more confident that I will find my way home this time!! I was at a meeting a few weeks back, and was shown a better way to get home, and thanks to her, it is a better way to get to the mall and other places, as well.

The second quilt completed, is the "Little Church In The Country" that I started at the beginning of this year that was chosen from my quilt tops, by my sister. I made her wait 8 months before I got it done. It would have been done sooner but all that moving we did, took away some of my creative ambition. However, it has been shipped and received and she loves it!! That makes me really happy to get my projects done.

Then, there's that handbag that got started and ended up waiting to finish the final few steps. I wasn't sure about the closure that was used in the pattern, and so it sat while I figured it out. As... if you aren't happy with a step or procedure - it is always best to take your time to be sure of your plan of action! Anyways, that is what I think and so when it was decided a trip to the store was in order. My final decision was to use two snap fasteners and since they were sewn on by hand I figured I could easily change my mind later, if that was necessary.

There are a few things I may add to the inside - so I can find things easier. I don't carry many things in it because otherwise it would be too heavy. So since I prefer not to go digging to find something, I will need to figure out how to maintain the balance within. There is an organizer unit that can be made to fit inside, that may just be advisable. Organized & Sew Ready

This is a collection of photographs to introduce you to my new sewing/quilting studio. The room has one small window, so I have added several lamps to illuminate my workspace. It doesn't necessarily make for great photo opportunities but it is a delight to the human eye. I enjoy just sitting there and allowing the elements in the room to relax me and even forget about the world or that I could be sewing! It is so organized, colorful and filled with memories; and cozy when the door is kept closed.

BEFORE:

This photo shows things set aside to make room for my new cabinet, which is a buffet/hutch that works perfectly for my fabrics and sewing supplies. Some people use it for china and dishes, but I love mine in my sewing studio.

AFTER:

My goals were to:

(1) get all the boxes and containers unpacked,

(2) arrange the furniture to utilize the best layout for the room, and

(3) to personalize the space with items that held special memories.

I added a stereo so I could listen to cd's or the radio. The containers are covered with a tablecloth decorated by my sister-in-law (now deceased) for a wedding gift. The drawers hold thread, fabric scraps, patterns, and miscellaneous items.

The hutch (above) holds my fabrics arranged in stacks by color. The buffet (below) holds many other sewing items.

The shelves hold my rotary cutting rulers; quilting books, serger, and cookbooks. A great place to sit and browse through the many creative projects that may one day be brought to life.

I have room to set up my ironing board next to my sewing table. Here I can press while sitting down, as I work on smaller pieces. When I need more space I can rotate the ironing board to press my fabrics and quilts.

I enjoy very much the interesting items, contests, swaps, and varied blogs that I view when visiting the quilting gallery website. I was definitely surprised when I won one of the Friday Give-aways in October. I received my prize just days before moving and so am only now blogging about it.

From The Other Side

It has been a busy few weeks here at -- where would that be?? I was going to say, at my house, but then that house isn't my house anymore, now my house is a different house. And, yes, it is beautiful here, even the pictures didn't lie. I love all the colored leaves... most of them are still on the trees, and a lot of them are now on the ground. A strong wind sure moves them around, and one of these days, I'll be out raking them.

For now, there is still work inside to do, with the final unpacking and trying to keep track of where everything is now. And, of course, I need to do address changes, and online sites need updating, and best of all, I should really get my lollapalooza bag finished. I was going to have it done before I packed my sewing machine, but the day we found out we had been approved I went and packed my machine. Then, afterwards, I realized I hadn't finished the lining.

My sewing room is getting done, just need to buy some cabinets to unpack the boxes. However, for now, I'm happy to have my sewing machine unpacked and my computer back online. Replacing and/or adding new furniture can come later, even though I function better with things organized.

I am happy to report that two bundles of cardboard did get set out for recycling this week. And more is waiting upstairs presently in the form of a mysterious Inukshuk-like figure overlooking the main floor with its creator.

Today we bought some groceries and checked out some places for furniture in Vancouver after we had stopped at a gas station to buy a map book as all those street names can really get one lost.

My plans are to check out the Fraser Valley Quilters' Guild on November 10th. I do look forward to connecting with a local quilt guild for quilting events and getting some help with shopping and getting around the city. If anyone belongs to this guild or knows someone that does, I'd love to hear from them. Also next week, our truck has an appointment as it is making a noise that doesn't appear to be going away.

PS... As for Halloween night, we were glad we bought candy just in case!! As we were moving into our house that afternoon, and didn't know if anyone would come. We had gone to buy some groceries and while we were still unpacking they started coming. Oh, where did we put that candy?? I believe our tally was 72 little trick-or-treaters. That was really quite fun, especially since we've never had more then 8 before when we lived out in the country.

Hmmm.... the month of October is soon drawing to a close. It has been an interesting month and my wishes are that the weather is beautiful for all the little ghosts and goblins as they collect their candy treats.

Here are some pictures I took last week when I was at the grocery store. Some really neat ideas to decorate your house for this time of year, if you are into that sort of thing. Also, some cool plants to add greenery to your indoor space, as for us the outdoor plants are now gone for the season.

What's Up Now?

I enjoy creating entries for my blogs and updating my website with new articles and things of interest. It was several days ago now, but it is still fresh in my mind, that my computer did some odd thing and wouldn't open up my web-building program. So, that means no updating for now...

As it was, the only way to use my new version of the program, was to load it onto my external hard drive and work with the limitations of my computer's functions. So, even though it was slow going at times, I enjoyed creating it.

This leaves me with two options, (1.) reload the program and redo the pages (as the backup copy gave me an error message and the importing feature couldn't do it's task) and hope it lasts; (2.) wait until I purchase a new computer (in November) and then redo the process and know it'll be capable of handling all my programs.

My computer is now three years old and hasn't the capability to run the programs properly that I now wish to use. I have tried restoring my files, but my backup copy didn't make it happen, so I am counting on the fact that it is time for a new computer.

Well... it isn't hard to see which option is better for the time and effort required. This means that my eBook will still come to my online store, however, I am not certain yet when that is possible. I had planned it to be November 9/09 as that is when my free pattern offer is expiring, but that is still to be determined. The book is now ready, and it seems the universe is saying, not now. I do look forward to getting a new computer and having it ready to work on as soon as everything gets installed.

My Lollapalooza

Well… I am on a roll, now!!

At one point, I asked myself, “Can I finish this or is it too difficult?” But, my next thought, was, “Can’t enter a picture of it to win the voter’s challenge if it doesn’t get done, now can I?” So, I did persist, and actually surprised myself!! I almost followed the pattern exactly, but… not quite, I wanted to add the lapel and so I did.

The pattern shows a very interesting fabric, and so I had the idea to use my denim scraps to assemble a fabric for the exterior of the handbag. So, that was fun, here is what it looked like at that stage.

It definitely increased the difficult level, due to the bulkiness of the seams, especially at the sides and bottom. But, that is what I wanted to try, so with added patience and persistence it got done.

I auditioned many buttons and labels before deciding on the ones I used. Except for the pattern, snap closure, and the four buttons that are on the tabs at the top of the bag, everything else was from my supplies. I just need to add the snap closure and finish the lining inside and it’ll be complete.

So my new goal is to complete every project I start, even if it is “too difficult”, “too easy”, “too boring to continue”, etc. That is my true intention. Now here is the first project that will begin that legacy. It is almost complete, but my sister wants to see it now. So here it is…

It is a very big bag so hopefully it stays light enough for me to carry. I do think the ladies at the quilt guild meetings will like it whenever I get back to joining one again later this year.

So my belief is that, even if the economy is doing poorly, my sewing and quilting projects will continue doing well. This bag is proof that very little money was needed to complete it. A positive attitude and a good imagination will always be important ingredients to having success in life.

Handbag Project

One site I discovered one day while browsing the wonderful world of web travel was Studio Kat Designs. Here I found a variety of great pattern designs for handbags.

I really liked her Boho Baguette #2100 done in orange fabrics with a beautiful embroidered sunflower design. It certainly is eye-catching! It will be in my pattern collection one day soon. I also have a particular fabric in mind that should look stunning.

However, at the time she was working on her newest design and so I waited until it was ready to purchase. Partly due to the fact that I couldn’t make up my mind on which pattern to buy.

I also picked this one first because I thought of the perfect fabrics that I already have in my collection that will make an interesting choice.

I figure because a lot of people view the economy as still doing poorly, that just isn't a good reason for not making beautiful projects using my own fabrics. It is all really about how we look at things. Don't we actually get more creative in those times, and that is a good thing!

My new pattern arrived today!! I look forward to making this handbag. Hope I can wait until next week… when I get to start on this project.

Blog Travel

I love to blog travel on the web!! I am finding so many creative techniques and people, it is so inspiring... handbags, selvage quilts, dying fabrics, too easy stained glass, fuse and tell, give-aways, project swaps, etc.

Just the other day I decided to set up my blog on the quilt show as I signed up to be a star member for one year back in early August. What I like to do now is go there on Sundays and spend time watching the latest shows. It is a really great way to spend an hour or so.

Okay, so with that said, I posted a comment on this blog yesterday and I already have lots of views. I also offer a free pattern download from my website because I had so much fun reviving my own website in August and it now has a new look, new name, and new content. I also have several patterns for sale now. So if you have any interest in fused machine applique the pattern is available until November 9, 2009 for free.

New Beginnings

It’s that time of year again when the leaves get painted in those beautiful shades of yellow, orange, red, purple and brown.

So it is also time for school, new schedules and harvest! Many thanks to the people busy working their fields so we can have an abundance of food.

It is also a good time to reflect on new changes one wishes to make to their lives through the activities and work we do. On the website at the quilting gallery some people are busy with organization of their creative workspaces. Cheers to you all! I love to see the spaces where we live and work revived with order and new energy.

It has been a great joy for me to redesign my website in August and have now launched the new pages. It has a new look, new name, and new items for sale and free downloads. Take a look and be inspired!

Not My Garden

It is much appreciated that we have a green lawn and colorful flowers and trees in this yard. However, sometimes the variety of plants growing here is less then ideal. And, sometimes it brings forth a colorful surprise!

Here are some to look at:

These plants are ready to explode their seed pods any day now. I touched one and it popped like a kernel of popcorn. We think these flowers are lady slippers.

I like this calendula flower, they are blooming in yellow and orange. Here's one poking out from behind the tall lady slippers.

Then.. the flowerbed beside the garage is actually filled up again with shade loving plants. Looks mostly like weeds! However, the calendula have found this locale favorable, as well.

The big plant in the photo below is thriving well. My guess, for this one would be oriental poppy. That is why it was saved from an earlier weeding. However, that is still to be determined. Looks, like I really should get out there to re-weed this flowerbed soon.

Lastly, I am showing you the crabapple tree, as the apples are now a bright red. They look delicious, but I haven't tried one yet. I know someone that would love some crabapple jelly. I am still debating whether I will get to that fun task this season.

A Hemming Bridge

While I was working on the auto towels, a request for hemming a pair of jeans came along. So, since it could wait a few days, I thought I’d use my serger to do the hems this time. Now on to that hemming job…

I remembered how the last time had gone hemming jeans. My sewing machine cried and screamed at me when I tried to convince it to go over those steep seams not once.. but four times!! It was very sad, indeed.

So.. I figured there must be a better way to make it easy on me and my wonderful quilting machine. Here is how it went:

FIRST, I cut that extra length off with my rotary tools, no more trying to cut them with a pair of scissors. This works perfectly and is very quick and accurate.

THEN, after serging the edges I only folded the edge over once instead of the usual two times. That is where so much bulk is made at the seams.

I figured let’s try only folding the edge over once and stitching it down with a straight stitch. Here is the finished look inside.

However, that was only one step I took to creating harmony with my project and my sewing machine. I also wanted to make the bulk seem like it wasn’t even there. Here you can see even with only one fold of the fabric the seams are still too high to make the trip over the ridge easy.

Since I don’t prefer to fiddle with extra gadgets that my machine doesn’t have, I issued the job to a piece of denim fabric. And the ride over the ridge was effortless. And my machine operated very quietly as it sewed its way around the pant leg.

Having extra scraps of denim handy, I had serged the edges of my scrap piece. I folded this piece of denim so I had three layers and set it next to the bulky seam.

So there you have my process of making a denim bridge and creating a pleasant experience for my machine. And, then the next time will seam sew much easier!!!

Resize That Towel

Today I was going through my digital photo files and remembered I was going to blog about this project. So, here it is… about one month ago I was asked to do this fun job.

Here are the project details. Cut towels in half and serge the cut edges. I had the perfect color thread for the job, too. I had picked out that color when I bought my machine. And it was cool to work with yellow. I always enjoy using my rotary cutting tools, as well.

Apparently they make great cleaning cloths – especially when they have been resized.

Ahhh… it is so nice to have a serger. I think though, that if I used it more the threading part would become more automatic without the “Will I remember how to thread it” question. I did okay, it is really quite straight forward, just remember to keep your head about it, and the task can be done with ease.

Okay, so next time I’ll bring you another project that I used my serger for, this time I put on navy thread. It did wait until I was all finished with this project, too!

Thought I’d get a few more pictures of those giant flowers growing next to the house. While I was there - bees were collecting nectar as I got my pictures. We worked in harmony as both tasks got done. I hoped I’d even catch one on my photographs. Take a look at what the camera lens captured as I photographed the flowers.

Playing Peek-A-Boo

Thought I’d check out the backyard again… to see what I’d find lurking in those forlorn flowerbeds; the former tenants may or may not have planted them?? Some plants were colorful, some were strange and two of them were playing a game of peek-a-boo. Read on and see what I discovered:

Found some interesting things too! Great colors… One a pink flower, and the other autumn shades. Hmmm…

Four:

Actually, the reason for going out with the camera was to photograph these giants. Are they weeds, or deliberately planted there? Do you know what these plants are? Some of them are almost five feet tall.

Summer Cool Down

JULY 2009

Feeling rather tired, overwhelmed, or just plain hot from the summer heat? It was at least 30.C indoors yesterday and today so I certainly didn’t wander too far away from the fan. Alas, a blast of hot air was better then no air at all!

We even found a navy colored bedspread to hang over the front window as it was allowing in a huge volume of heat from the afternoon and evening sun. Too much more of this, and I may consider getting someone to haul my table to the depths of the basement. However, I am not anticipating that sort of action, just will need to watch more television or solve my book of Sudoku puzzles quicker.

That said, I felt inspired to dig out those pictures I took of the birthday cake that I had wanted to put into a slideshow from December 2008. However, after doing my first ever youtube video, thought it be good practice to work through the same process and make it into a video. Thought that one video needed company!

A Bird’s Eye View

RATHER BE QUILTING

Seems to me… that I once thought quilting was only for the long cold winter days. Hence, I retract that thought and think it is a great activity on those long, hot summer days, too.

If one hasn’t the option of being someplace to change the temperature, at the time, why not stay indoors to get out of the heat. Sitting in front of a cool breeze from the fan is more appealing to me then being outdoors melting in the summertime heat.

At The End of the Rainbow

A RAINBOW

Have you ever wished you could find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? I am sure most would say, “yes”. Well, I think you may have already found it! Do you know why?

I was thinking about this today, and I think the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is a “QUILT SHOP”.

Isn’t it a wonderful sight – to step into a quilt shop? Then, seeing all those beautiful COLORS lined up in rows – ready for us to gaze upon and touch! It seems that they call out to us and we are enchanted. And, it’s even harder to leave the shop without taking some of those beautiful colors home with us.

Now don’t you agree!!

More Project Jar Ideas

Creating the Jar

Remember the "Project Jar" idea that I read about from another blog that I follow? And, then I also made one... It was really FUN to create something quick and easy - and enable the ideas of another creative quilter to help my own creativity.

This morning was going to be the day I posted "____" idea on my blog. And I also came up with a few more cool ideas to add to this topic or make it a two-part entry. But, that was brought to a halt really quick, because I couldn't find where I had saved it on my computer.

Yes, I had moved it from its original spot, now I can't seem to find it. BLAH! But, wait, no it's okay, because I had another neat idea....

I used up all my topics from the project jar and it now sits empty! So, why not use it (or if you have one and it's still filled with topics - another jar may be waiting to be created) for this.....

BLOGGING JAR...

Write your topic ideas on slips of paper for your upcoming BLOG entries. Then... along with the idea also write on the paper where this information is being jotted down so you can find it easily the next time you need it.

So, I now have a dedicated folder on my computer, called "Blog Ideas" where I can write down my thoughts, ideas, add photos, etc. so next time it can be found easily. This way I am ready to add all those nifty ideas to my blog - when I want to!!

As I was working on my project (from the project jar topics) I also wanted to save samples of the fabrics I was using. Usually... though, as I work on a project, my mind gets busy and I don't always remember to do certain things on a consistent basis. Then, I need to spend time rethinking - which fabrics did I use? Where did I put them? Wouldn't it be easier if I could eliminate this rethinking process?

So... then one day, this new idea came to mind - that I could make this very process easier if I saved a small fabric piece; and later in the day, I could go back and cut the swatches that I wanted to save. Then any leftover pieces would go into my scrap bags which are usually put away afterwards anyway.

FABRIC JAR...

I used a small plastic peanut butter jar that was available and was just perfect for this task - of holding the fabric pieces until I was done cutting the current fabrics. Then, when I was ready, I cut swatches 1" x 3" added a label and put them in 3.5" x 2" Ziploc bag for safekeeping.

The 3" x 3" sticky notepad on my table worked great because two quick cuts with the rotary cutter gave me three papers to write the project name on for the swatches. Now, these baggies go into the jar and are ready for me when I want to create a scrapbooking page or whatever later on...

Plant An Acorn

July 1st: Canada Day

We went out to watch the movie "Ice Age 3" yesterday afternoon. Ahhh, such a fun movie! Reminds me how cute it is to watch children's faces as they view their favorite shows. That is something I consider "priceless".

Then... afterwards watched a city fireworks show as the sun dimmed the skyline. Sure hope next time we bring blankets, as we have not gone to a fireworks show in the summer for a very long time. One forgets how cold it can be sitting on the ground.... waiting for the show to begin.

Wow... I am really tired today! I must be spending too much time at my computer and sewing machine. Or, there must be another reason... just have to set aside time to think about it. Second thought: It doesn't matter, I have more creative things to think about! Some events are to be enjoyed when they happen and seems to me, there is usually time afterwards to relax....

July and August: Blog entries

I will be posting entries about twice a week for the summer months. I plan to spend more time working on my website and checking out other people's sites. Anyways.... that's what summer is all about, right? Doing things differently then the set routine.

As we have all heard the saying... "A change is as good as a rest". I like that! Seems I like to change up things a lot - must mean I get the best of both worlds.

Quilt Binding Made Easy

It was almost time to...... do a QUILT BINDING again! Would I remember how and where is that book?

I wasn't sure if I could find the book I usually refer to for the instructions. It wasn't in the boxes that I looked through and oh -- I so didn't want to lift those heavy boxes again... so soon! Hence, I would do it my way, without that book...

So, I had a NEW PLAN... with my digital camera and my computer, I could document the process that I found to be difficult. I would work out the problem areas ~ with instructions and photographs ~ so it was clear in my mind and no wasting time "trying to figure it out" each time I came back to this task!

Do You Believe?

Believe You Can!

I believe this works....

Remember the "Project Jar" that I made? Well, I wasn't sure how to use it at first because I had no idea what items lurked in my closet that needed attention. Or, I could say, "What closet?" As things were still packed up in storage to have any notion on what was left undone.

It was my BOOK PROJECT that I was going to start soon, and then I got an idea... why not type out a list of the individual items in my project. Then I could use my jar!

I had my project jar ready and waiting.... and so when the day arrived, I reached into the jar and pulled out a paper.

Ready...Set...Go!

"Ahhh.... not that one first," I replied to myself. And I set it on the table...

So after a time... when my mind stopped arguing with itself, it was mentally stated, that what I picked, would always be done!!! I certainly did not want to break my only jar rule: Do it today!

The days... after that first one, were different because I looked forward to doing what the paper revealed. I think that my jar is spelling out "P L A Y" in simple terms.

Give & Take Applique

I purchased this pattern from the merchant's table at a Parksville quilt guild meeting back in January '09. It caught my attention, and I must say, it had to come home with me. Now, when I placed it on my "must-do" list, just over two weeks ago, I really didn't know which fabrics or design I'd choose, but I knew it would be done.

Only How Would I Make It...

I certainly like to quilt! I certainly like to design and create my own patterns! And, I certainly like the freedom quilting give one to explore new and creative ideas! Here's where it gets mysterious... I just can not stick with the program! You know... follow the exact directions and come out with a duplicate of the project!!

Work In Progress...

As promised, here is the work in progress of my "Give & Take Applique" project from Patchworks Studio. After getting the pattern out and seeing what fabrics I had on hand, it was apparent that it would be decision time.

I have been following a plan here, not one set in stone but it is my goal this year to use fabrics and supplies that I already own, whenever possible. So... some of the confusion or time delay in coming to a decision was based on the fabrics that I chose and would they work in this project. Therefore, after changing some things I was able to use the fabrics I had and get all the pieces cut out in the right colors! Whew, glad it worked!

PHOTO 1: I like to use the blanket stitch whenever possible, and when stitching any leaves or flowers I opt for green colored thread. PHOTO 2: Then, I show the assembly process of the three layers. I prefer to use a temporary fabric adhesive to hold them together and prevent the layers from shifting when they are sewn together.

Because I didn't think I could handle the larger project and I didn't want to cut all those little pieces for the smaller project, I decided to make only six blocks instead of the twelve. So... now what? After careful consideration and also realizing the colors I had picked from my supply would not be enough for what I had envisioned on "Layout 3" I came up with this design as shown below.

Quilt Binding Made Easy...

While working on the binding, I decided to document the process with written notes and photos of the way I do it so I could get a perfect result everytime. I seem to forget exactly how to connect both ends of the binding when the next time comes around. The method that I like to use seemed to always confuse me, so I changed some of the process and now I can say, "I'd love to do another quilt binding!"

My favorite quilting tools allow me to get as creative as I want and also make that process seam so easy and fun! It's like PLAY!

FAVORITES #1: I enjoy using my Clover products shown here. The tools are really comfortable to hold and are long enough so they do not slip out of your hand when using them. It even makes ripping out those stitches less tiring. For more information, you can check out the website that I list above. These products are available at your local quilt shop as well. Shown here: tailors awl or stiletto; quilting pins (heads resist melting if that iron happens to get too close); and seam ripper.

FAVORITES #2: My rotary cutting tools are my favorite way to cut out anything that allows for a straight cut to be made - whether it is on fabric, paper, or plastic!! It makes cutting straight lines very accurate and quick! That perfect straight edge is now obtainable!

So... I cut out printed pages and photos, scrapbooking designs, just about anything that can be cut with a pair of scissors on a straight line. I've been thinking... a brand new rotary cutter would be great, then I could use the old one for paper cutting and the new one for fabric!

REMEMBER DOING THIS?... Piling up several folded newspapers on the table so you could use a regular ruler and craft knife to cut out things for paper projects that were awkward to do with scissors? Sure is great that someone invented this new method that we can use now!!

FAVORITES #3: I enjoy using my digital camera to capture images of people, places, and objects. From these images I can later connect them to places on the web or new ideas that need further study.

One could not imagine the process years ago on the ease and ability we now have for taking photographs. A blog entry is so easy today with our new technology! I love taking pictures of my works in progress... this allows me to recall easily what I have done and how to do it again later on a new project. Candied Apples

Having completed and mailed the necessary company tax returns this week, and the safe return of a family friend to the airport; it is time to continue with a new project that I just started...

But... before I show you -- check out these pictures of a stand of candied apples we seen at the airport today. Do they not look good? I certainly would not attempt eating such a delight, but it makes for good eye candy.

[PS~220 - 'Ti Leaves' by Patchworks Studio]

I bought this pattern this past winter from the merchant table at a quilt guild meeting on Vancouver Island. Susan and Daphne were the merchants for that meeting and it was this pattern I was attracted to and had to buy it. It was really cool to meet them in person and I later ordered my EQ6 software from their online store. The technique, "Give & Take Applique(TM)" intrigued me and so I am working on it now.

I also decided this week, that if I don't use the patterns I buy, that I will not be allowed to buy anymore! So, I have a few pictures to show you now, but will post my finished project when it is done. The pattern gives two options and so with some effort, I'll try and decide which one to make. I never really know what I'll end up with -- until it's done!

What Fabric Was It?

Fabric Packets

Next time you want to recreate a quilt or even see what you have used before, here's a great way to remember... Save a fabric swatch of the ones you used!

I used tiny ziploc bags (3" x 4") and cut out a 1" x 2" fabric sample of each of the fabrics I used in the quilt. These were from quilts that I had designed myself and wanted to save a sample of the fabrics I had used in them. I also included a sample of the batting and backing fabric. It felt right at the time to save this information, as one never knows what may come of those ideas in the future!

In the ziploc packet I had placed a label showing the name of the quilt, the size, the fabrics, batting sample, and any other information I'd want to recall later. I realize now that a fancier container or method of storage would be nice too.

You could also save fabric samples for quilts you'd made from purchased patterns and given away as special gifts. Sometimes... you may want this information later on when you can use it for a different idea you just thought of!!

I found it a great way to remember what my quilting journey has been like and maybe... if so inclined, making time to create a scrapbooking page or two of those favorites!

Denim Panels Revealed

In these two photos, I show you the finishing of the denim panel. Since the edges have all been serged, they are already very tidy and so I've just folded the top 3" and the bottom at 3/4" to the wrong side and stitched across the panel. I decided on making two rows of stitching at the top as these could also be hung on a rod if one wanted to do it that way. I also used a stitch length of 4 so that it can easily be taken out if I wanted to alter them later.

Side Note: I did use my seam ripper a few times as I decided what would be the best method to stitch them. I enjoy using my seam ripper occassionally as it needs more purpose then to just sit in my sewing box.

The goal was to stick with simplicity and use the materials that were already available to utilize. Therefore, I have borrowed the hooks from the pinch-pleated sheer drapes and used the current rod in place.

Here I am showing you a closer view of the denim panels hanging on the curtain rod. I have overlapped each panel to create this look. The light from behind made it difficult to get a good picture so I do not know how good you will be able to see the complete view on the pictures below.

Preview - Take One

Window Panels - Take Two

My first thoughts were to cover the window in the centre because it was too bright to work on my computer. But I realized that it worked best to cover the side windows with a stationary window covering as this was where the biggest glare came from and the sheer drapes didn't help. These windows have a frosted glass on the outside and the sun really creates a blinding glare on them. I also like to be able to look outside when working so the denim panels would have been difficult to move to the sides as the rod isn't perfectly straight.

Note: I would love to see the denim panels hang perfectly straight, but I will not alter them at this point. In the future, on a different window, I'd consider adding an iron-on Pellon fusible fleece to the back side or even sewing the panels together to make one piece. But that will be determined by where their next place may be.

Valance

I had made 11 panels to fit the centre window, but found they did not hang nicely and the better location was to place them on the two side windows, so I only used 10 panels. With this change, I put the remaining panel on the centre window as a valance. And, of course, I used safety pins because all quilter's have these on hand for pin basting a quilt's layers together.

This is my completed project and its functioning ability in my workspace. I believe my objectives have been achieved and whenever it is time to reuse them in a different setting, I have several options to make them provide the necessary attributes in the future.

Denim Panels

Making A Neat Stack!

I kept cutting until I had gone through all the denim pieces that allowed me to make a cut measuring 6" x 24". From this amount, I figured I only needed 11 panels, so I used 33 of the 39 pieces. Three of these pieces were sewn together to make a long panel. This picture shows you how much the cut edges of denim ravels. This is why I looked forward to sewing the denim pieces together using my serger.

Not Everything Is Random

I laid them on the table to see in which order I would hang them from the curtain rod. The window is about 65"x 65" -- so if they are hung side by side it should be enough - anyways that is my original plan.

Numbering My Strips

I numbered each strip with a letter. All I found was red tape and a felt marker, so that is what I used. To make sure I didn't transfer any black ink onto myself or anything else, I used a piece of scotch tape to cover up the letter. I also found that later when doing the header and footer of each panel the letter was very helpful in knowing which end was up!

A Neat Serged Edge

The serged seams really looked neat and tidy! All seams and edges were serged and this made my project sew up very quickly. Because I wasn't really sure how to serge around a corner, I did the top and bottom edges first and then sewed up each side. It was quicker for me because any amount of thinking through how to do something would actually take up more time then doing what I knew would work for my skill level.

My goal was to make a window covering - quick and easy!! So this step was really fun too! Serging is fast and creates such a neat edge - I enjoyed putting my serger to the task and it worked beautifully! So the next step is finishing off the top and bottom making it ready for hanging!!

Denim Pieces Reinvented

My Denim Pieces
I want to...

Do you collect things... so you can one day make them into something? It was about three years ago that I went through boxes of old clothing and took the time to cut the good parts out of old, worn jeans. One day I'd use them! You know the three R's, right? [Reduce, Reuse, Recyle]

So here I am now needing something to cover that window that is extremely bright when working on my computer or while sewing. It'll also be great to cut out some of that summer heat later in the season.

Hmmmm..... I have lots of fabric, wonder what I can do with it to fit the situation of covering that window! But, when I considered it more, it would take more yardage of one type or color that I would actually have. And, not wanting to buy more, I wanted to resolve it with stuff I already had on hand.

THEN... it happened! Thoughts of what could I do with those pieces of denim I've saved and packed along with me for the last three years came to light. As my quilting studio in this house (living room) would be short-lived, it made sense that spending a great amount of money, of effort, and of time on this project, would be silly. So, this is what I did...

Firstly... I checked out some layouts in my EQ6 (Electric Quilt) software. Then wanting it to go quickly, smoothly and with as little grief as possible... I decided just going with the flow and allowing creativity and ease of completion to just happen.

Secondly... getting those thoughts under control, as I haven't been great on just allowing, I figured it wouldn't be so bad to give it a try.

Thirdly... I wanted to get started quickly and get finished just as quickly. So, I decided to see if I could get at least 36 pieces of denim. So, using the special tools that make this process fun, I went with cutting pieces the size of my Omnigrid cutting ruler of 6" x 24".

I really enjoy cutting fabric with these tools. So, that part was indeed quick and fun! Continue the journey with me, next time, as I show you the process I took to sew these pieces together.... into something that should actually function in the matter that I required. Project Jar

Decorated Jar

YEAH!!! Since packing up my sewing machine and related stuff in late March, it has been eagerly waiting for me to get back to stitching up more beautiful things...

So my first project was this... I stitched up a pretty yellow sleeve for a project jar. This came to me from Linda's blog and I just got inspired to make one for myself. I am working on a book and thought, hey, this would help with deciding which component of my project I should do next.

Then, I wanted to check out what to do with the buttons on my yellow label. So what is more perfect then... a digital camera to take photos of various placements. It is a cool way to audition the arrangments. Certainly was nice to see what I had for this task. Oh but, I did need to limit my time looking at all those beautiful buttons. Do I go plain buttons or fancy ones?? Here are only two of my options:

Ready to Inspire Me!

I used a Tostitos spinach dip jar which looked about the size of the one Linda used. Also, I didn't have colored paper on hand, so I printed out my labels with purple ink and a fancy border. To make my jar suit me, it included several things that I love: the color yellow, buttons, and creating with MS Word 2007.

So to not reveal any secrets from my book, I included a "coffeebreak" paper so I could show you my labels. As I think when sewing -- we should also remember to take breaks or walks outdoors to ensure we can go back to sewing the next day, and the next... Otherwise those muscles may just be naughty and give us pain. :(

Backyard Blossoms

Springtime!

I enjoyed wandering through the backyard, as if anyone can actually wander in such a small space... More like meandering and lingering for that perfect camera angle.

Here are two trees that are now in bloom. Don't ask me what they are, just yet, as I'm not sure exactly. I guess I'll see what transpires... and I believe I'm here for that period of time.

Flowers attract my camera... regardless if I should know what kind they are!!! Nature provides me with lots of photo opportunities. And that is why I love to do it, even though I am an amateur at it, a digital camera allows for many retakes.

A Closer Look!

Here are some photos I took in the park today. Just taking time to HAVE FUN!! I am sure you've heard the saying, "Laughter is the best medicine!" Right? So, I'm getting in my daily dose! Remember to take your "laughter" medicine every day and things will get better and better. My camera is getting a different view of the landscape...

Scenic Mountains

Here are a few photos I picked out of my file - from our trip through BC in April 2009. I took these through the back window of the truck where I was seated, while we drove.

I enjoyed using my camera on our trip back, as I didn't have it on the way down. So I wanted to see how many good ones I could take and get more practice taking photos in different situations.

Mountains are so majestic and have such an inspiring effect on us. The scenery is definitely beautiful and any good photos help one recall the journey.

The Power of Flowers

Flowers!! How wonderful these are! They are so colorful and pleasing to the eyes, it makes one glad to be alive. It certainly helps us to feel better when the weather is less then enjoyable outdoors! This time of year (or is it most of the year) we are longing for the perfect gardening days and seeing our labors reward us with beautiful flowers and vegetables. Soon, it'll be that way again.

Mother's Tribute

Dear Mum

I bought this at a little shoppe at the very cool 'Old Country Market' on the island! And why I love it... well... I like buttons. And to think that buttons--which are so small and simple--actually do have that great purpose of holding things together. That is impressive!

I also like the concept it brings to mind. I am very grateful for my family and all they represent to me. Thanks to the person(s) that created this special piece of artwork.

TODAY, I send out special wishes for ALL mothers for their unique ability to hold things together. No one is small and insignificant to have such an awesome responsibility! Happy Mother's Day!!

Setting Up the Studio

Sew What!

Last October, I went to work putting away my sewing/quilting things for our winter holiday. Only a few items got to come along. But the good thing I remember is that I organized all my stuff and downsized where I could.

Now, it is time again to sort through those items from the stack of boxes that sit in another room. The picture shows what I have found so far. Next, I'd like to go through and find my fabrics and books, as they are a great source of inspiration.

Organizing is Fun!

The first thing I organized was my container of scrap fabrics. Yes, this is all that I had saved! So, next I separated the colors and put them into ziploc bags. Now, when I work on a project, I'll easily be able to see where to look for a particular color.

Birds Eye View!

There are hooks in the ceiling so why not hang my owls from them? They bring special memories of our island trip. They were handicrafted from twigs and mosses.

Good Morning!

This rooster was carved from a single piece of wood. I think it looks great sitting on my sewing table. It was a must buy item for me, when I seen it on the island. Since I was born in the year of the rooster, it has special significance to me.

Do you remember those dolls that stood facing the wall? I am not certain what their purpose was, but this reminded me of those days. This one is a real, live boy!

Now, my son in the picture below had almost a similar pose. Here he was trying to connect to send a text message to family of our day's destination, but it was not working! This mountain locale could not deliver that message.

My Car

A stop in Kamloops for fuel on April 1st, shows how dirty my car got on the u-haul trailer, and that's no joke. The trip back was good, just we were rather sad because we were on our way back to the prairies. Our winter island getaway turned out to be a very cool experience! One that I will always be grateful that we took.

New York Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce

How long has it been? Back in July 2008 I had wanted cheesecake for dessert! But the time we didn't order it was the only time we found it on the menu on a weekend retreat.

Ahhhhh.... so on March 30th, the restaurant in the Ramada we stayed in had it on the menu. At last, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity again! IT was very good!!

Gone Missing!

Since leaving the island on March 30 -- my computer hasn't been able to connect to the internet on a consistent basis. We are still in travel mode and do not have an internet connection on our truck -- so my posts may be sparse for another month. ;)

Therefore, I will post and read my fave's whenever I am able. I do enjoy checking out what others have been writing about. See you when I can.

Triple Scoop!

Our time on Vancouver Island is drawing to a close! We end our visit by stopping in at one of our favorite places in the area. Here we have enjoyed browsing the many shops along this street and will bring home special memories, treasures we bought for ourselves and gifts for family. A place we feel will draw us back again!

The Country Market

On this warmer, sunny day we all bought our first delicious ice cream cones here from the ice cream shoppe and enjoyed it outdoors. Our flavors included: tiger, rainbow swirl, chocolate, maple, and vanilla. It was cold and favourful and satisfying-to last us until the next time...

Someone Took Our Picture

The Country Market is a unique experience and provides one with a wonderful variety of items to buy from food, gifts, a great restaurant, outdoor fruit/veggie stand, ice cream shoppe; and many delightful shops of creative crafts and clothing items. A place to wander and discover an island custom.

And now it is time for spring to come to the rest of the country. And so our next adventure is soon to begin...

Scrapbooked Quilt Project

I usually don't make scrapbooking pages of my quilt projects. However, since I've done this one, I may find merit in doing it again.

As it seems to go -- memories are best recalled when we have photos and journals to refer back to whenever we need to sharpen our mental images or clearly give others a glimpse of our accomplishments.

I had a lot of fun working on these pages so that I could remember all the details to review at a later date. This also gives me opportunity to make sure I collect the things I want to save for a scrapbooking project for future endeavours.

Here are two of the pages from this project that I made to remember all the details!! Enjoy.

The last sibling turned 50 last year! So, I quilted and scrapbooked and schemed and planned a party... Hence, the desire to catalogue this journey so we could all recall it when our memories faded and we needed a laugh or two.

Perhaps... one day I'll even see a photo or two of it being used for the bed it was intended for! I do enjoy hearing news that my quilted gifts are useful and enjoyed.

Thread Catcher

Sewing any project evidently produces waste that needs to be deposited into a waste basket. Many times one doesn't have a waste basket handy to all the locations one is working at during the course of a project. Hence, one can be constantly running to the waste basket to deposit threads or fabric pieces.

Hope

This can also be helpful when working at a different location then your own sewing/quilting studio. Since, I have been away from my home, and a waste basket wasn't in the room I was working in, I found a handy way to solve this dilemma. It worked really well, as one can get frustrated at threads that stick to everything unless otherwise put safely into a waste basket.

I enjoyed the wording on this tissue box and thought it added a cheerful message -- collecting my threads and fabric scraps during my sewing projects.

This is one way to quickly resolve the missing waste basket situation. An empty tissue box has another use until it is recyled when I am done with it. The contents of the box can easily be deposited into the waste basket at any time.

I'm A Winner

Today's quilt guild meeting feature was a garage sale. So, after short order, the sale was open for shopping. There was a great assortment of fabrics, patterns, books and misc. items. I found two packages of 3 1/2" squares, a total of 100 squares for $2.00 (will be great for my mini landscape project that still awaits my attention), 2 fat quarters - one free, one $0.50, 4 spools of thread for $1.00, and a book for $5.00.

And, best of all, I won a door prize. It included a 1/2 metre piece of fabric, a pkg. of sewing machine needles, and a tin with pre-threaded needles. Cool, eh!

I also took a finished quilt and the flimsy(quilt top only) of my grandson's quilt for "show and tell". Thinking that this will be my last guild meeting before heading home from our island holiday, it was a good time to do this. If you've never took a project for the 'show and tell' segment of your guild, it feels great to hear a room full of quilters responding to your work of art!

Paper Templates

Using A Paper Template

Here is a method I use when cutting applique pieces from fabric -- that have straight edges. It uses less time and effort, and simplifies the process. And, especially satisfying if you can save a trip to the store because you forgot to put plastic template material on your shopping list!

When you have an applique pattern piece with straight edges, for your quilt project, I enjoy using my rotary cutter, cutting mat, and cutting rulers to make the job simple. Also, no need to cut out a plastic template, thus saving you the need to have plastic sheets on hand.

Ruler Placemat

Use scotch tape to secure the template onto the fabric on two sides of the paper template. Then lay the cutting ruler on the template so the cutting edge is one-fourth from the solid line. Cut and turn until all sides are cut out. If you have cut a strip to the width of the pattern, then only two sides need cutting this way. Just take off the tape and use it to attach the next side or piece until all your pieces have been cut out.

Now that was easy, wasn't it?

Wildlife Recovery

Bald eagles

Another place to see nature firsthand is at the North Island Wildlife Recovery & Educational Centre on Vancouver Island. Enjoying birds is what I like and this was a neat experience for me. I especially liked the barred owls - Bardo and Blue.

They have a very nice facility for caring for injured or orphaned wildlife. Those that aren't able to heal to be released back into the wild are able to educate the public on wildlife and environmental issues.

Donations make a difference to the success of any non-profit, charitable organization. Visit their website for more information and more interesting things to see at the centre.

The robins are out enjoying the yard. It doesn't seem like spring when one looks outside today. The wind is cold and the ground is white, but the sun did come out to shine and hopes are out that this is the last sign of winter.

Pretty Buttons

More Buttons For Me

Seems there is always something that catches our attention and here is one of mine! I like buttons! All shapes, sizes, colors, and the way they feel in my hands, and such... Why, I don't know, but I just do! The package these buttons came in, had a "believe" button in it, so I had to buy them. And, if I hadn't bought them, this post would not be here right now, because all my buttons are waiting in a box for their new home.

Now, I'll need to think up a purpose for all those buttons that I have bought, been given, and even recycled from old clothing. My first granddaughter dislikes buttons on her clothes. No real reason, just is that way! So, when looking through some of my patterns for children's clothing, guess what? The ones I chose to buy, all have buttons!!

This may be solved now... I have a new granddaughter. Perhaps, I'll just need to wait until she can wear them. So, I intend to make a pretty dress or two for her as she grows.

Milner Gardens

Enjoying the return of spring is always a very happy reunion! Even, when one lives or visits the west coast of Canada. The short winters are very nice. However, according to the locals, they would really like to see spring as much as the rest of the country.

The afternoon was spent wandering through a beautiful garden and woodland. Trying really hard to be springlike, the weather sent us sunshine mixed with a cold wind and delicate kernels of hail. We did see some pretty spring flowering bulbs and enjoyed a hot cup of tea and loved the variety at the giftshop.

If you enjoy wandering through a woodland garden, then it would be a beautiful spot to visit -- I must admit a warmer day would add that perfect touch of peace and tranquility we all need.

Flannelette - Backing

I enjoyed working on this quilt top. Then... I find it is really fun to take the quilt top to show other people. Today, I showed it to the gals at the quilt shop and got really positive feedback from them. I plan to show it at the quilt guild meeting coming up later in the month. There are always very lovely quilts presented during the 'Show and Tell' segment.

And, I was told I was standing under a lucky star today. It was during their 30% off sale and there was enough fabric on the bolt for the backing fabric that we chose for the quilt. Yay for me!!

When it has been quilted together, I look forward to seeing the awesome expression on my little grandson's face. He is very fun to watch when he's opening gifts.

Center Block - with side borders

I have been busy working on this quilt this week, and haven't made time to post any more pictures of my progress. So here are two more pictures, the top one showing the side borders added to the baby blocks. Then, a strip of the tractor fabric was added to the top and bottom.

Next time, I will show the finished quilt top on a bed. I do not have a twin size bed available to to show proper placement, but you'll be able to see the finished top.

Birthday Cake - Home

Today is my birthday! I enjoyed some delicious cake and a great day exploring the island with my son. Waiting for the rain clouds to clear so we could go outdoors, was getting unbearable, so we ventured out anyway. The day did start out with some sunshine and then later short showers of rain as well.

We checked out Morningstar Farm out of Parksville on a self guided tour, tasted samples of cheese, braved the muddy walking trail, well... almost, and enjoyed shopping at the farmstore. The trail will have to wait until a drier day!

Then we drove to Nanaimo to shop at the largest mall on the island. It was where we stopped for a late lunch and did some shopping.

Then drove home in the rain, and also enjoyed some cake! Then, it was time to rest after a long, fun day.

Columbia Block

Center Block

I am working on the twin size quilt for my grandson. I have the center block completed and can now move on to the inside borders to continue with the design.

I thought using baby blocks in the center interesting as it also fits his name. I have used a buttonhole stitch for the outer edges and a zig-zag stitch for the inside seams of the block and the lettering.

I usually use a black thread for the stitching, but thought a brown would be nice to match the fabric of the block, but didn't have any with me. So, instead of going to the store, I found a blue-green variegated thread that I think looks quite nice. It blends in more with the fabrics and allows the blocks to stand out. The block design is called "Columbia".

This time I didn't fuse my pieces down and stitch around them in a dark color thread. This is my favorite way, but thought I could try turning under the edges instead and using a matching thread. Anyways, it was only six blocks and I did manage to complete them using this method.

Parrot Refuge

It was one of those times that I will always remember. My son and I enjoyed an afternoon visiting the parrots at the World Parrot Refuge in Coombs, BC. We truly enjoyed the experience and will hold it as a very special memory.

Always having enjoyed watching the birds and listening to their songs, it was a unique experience to have two parrots come sit on my shoulder and say hello. All creatures on our planet deserve a safe and happy environment to live. Now these parrots do!

On The Edge New Growth
Pretty To Look At!

Trying out some new settings - using gridlines on the screen to see placement. I thought it looked cool to angle the scenic view of the mountains on the screen. And, closeups are always revealing! These bushes and berries look really nice, but as the saying goes: "Look, But Don't Touch" is very relevent here, don't you think?

I am enjoying my Sony Cybershot digital camera. I intend to set up a photo album to share more of my photos.
